Pogies 2.0

In the post below, find the Pogies I designed for my sister after she suggested a few modifications to the ones I knit her a year ago.

For those of you on Ravelry.com, you can find the pattern by searching for "Pogies 2.0. This will give you a nice printable PDF for the pattern. If you aren't on Ravelry (and if you knit, you should be!), you can find the pattern below, in the the best crummy formatting that Blogger allows.

Feel free to make copies or link to the page, but please don't sell it (it's OK if you sell items made from the pattern though) or remove the credit to Fervid Design, 2008. If you knit some pogies, take pictures and send them my way for posting here! And stay tuned, a set of kayak pogies is next on the list.

Happy Rowing!

Pogies!

Mid-Style Mitt
End-Style Mitt

Keep your favorite rower's (even if it's you!) hands warm with Pogies 2.0. The name results from the requested modifications made to a more basic pogie pattern I wrote a year ago, after a season of use on the open, er, lake. Pogies 2.0 have a looser, wider wrist cuff in order to facilitate the rower getting his/her hands quickly free in the event of a water landing or other event, are a lighter weight to make them easier to tuck into the waistband of a pair of rowing tights, and are of a superwash wool so that they won't felt with continued wet usage.

Mitt shown knit with Lana Grossa Meilenweit Mega Boots Stretch, about 100 yards per pogie. You can use a similar sport weight superwash yarn – it doesn't need to contain stretch elastic, but a high percentage of wool is best for its “warm when wet” qualities.

Directions for 1 size, with customization options: it 2 “end-style” pogies for a sculler, or one end and one “mid-style” for a sweep rower. Or really go for the gusto and knit two end-style and one mid-style for a complete set to cover all eventualities!

GAUGE: ~7.5 stitches per inch over circular stockinette with size 2 needles.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES: US #4 (3.5 mm) and #2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles.

OTHER NOTIONS: Stitch marker, stitch holder, yarn needle, measuring tape or ruler

PATTERN STITCHES: 2x2 rib for cuffs, stockinette for body.

ABBREVIATIONS: Sts = Stitches, K = knit, P = Purl, K2tog = knit 2 sts together

Soft Serve Baby Hat - Discussion

Ok, so 4 years on I feel the need to comment on a few things, and maybe add something to the pattern. I've spent more time with babies, so now I think I might start the first 12 rounds with a 2x2 rib and THEN start the first seed round -- this would help the whole thing stay on the head a bit better, but the first round of seed should flop over it for the effect.

Second - I wrote this pattern because a beginner loved this hat (I devised it while knitting a demo for a yarn store) and was really unsure she could knit it herself, having never used a pattern or knit in the round before. So I made the instructions extremely explicit and tried to proof them a bunch. If you find errors, inconsistencies or confusing areas, please let me know! Hope you enjoy.

Soft Serve Baby Hat - Instructions

"SOFT SERVE" Baby Hat

This delicious swirl of a baby hat whips up in no time. Uses King Color Baby Australian Merino, around 1/2 skein (~100 yds) or you can use a similar fingering weight yarn, even cashmere!

Directions for 2 sizes: 0-3 months (3-6 months see bottom of instructions).

Gauge: 7 stitches per inch over stockinette, pre-blocking

Suggested Needles: US #2 (2.75 mm) circulars, double-pointed needles

Other Notions: stitch markers (7), yarn needle, measuring tape or gauge-finder

Pattern Stitch: Seed Stitch. k1, p1, k1, p1 - repeat for first round. Following round will be p1, k1, p1, k1, - repeat for second round. Repeat both rounds.

Instructions:

For 0-3 months:

Before you begin: Knit a swatch in the round and check to make sure your gauge is 7 sts per inch in stockinette (knit each row). Adjust needle size if necessary

Preparation: Cast on 73 sts. Connect in round on circular needles, taking care not to twist the join. Place markers at start of round and after every 12 stitches, leaving 1 stitch between final and first marker. This ‘odd’ stitch allows the pattern stitch to be knit correctly in the round.

Body of hat: Work in pattern stitch for 14 rounds (Note that each stitch will be knit or purled in alternate rounds creating the “seed” pattern.)

First decreasing round: Knit (knit stitch only) until 2nd stitch before next marker, then K2tog (11th and 12th stitches). Repeat 5 more times to decrease to 67 sts. Knit 1 stitch between final and first marker to complete row. Knit 4 more rounds. Work in pattern stitch for 10 rounds.

Second decreasing round: Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (10th and 11th stitches). Repeat 5 more times to decrease to 61 sts. Knit 1 stitch between final and first marker to complete row. Knit 4 more rounds. Work pattern stitch for 10 rounds.

Third decreasing round: Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (9th and 10th stitches). Repeat 5 more times to decrease to 55 sts. Knit 1 stitch between final and first marker to complete row. Knit 4 more rounds. Work pattern stitch for 8 rounds.

Fourth decreasing round: Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (8th and 9th stitches). Repeat 5 more times to 49 sts. Knit 1 stitch between final and first marker to complete row. Knit 4 more rounds. Work pattern stitch for 8 rounds. Switch to double-pointed needles.

Fifth decreasing round: Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (7th and 8th stitches). Repeat 5 more times to decrease to 43 sts. Knit 1 stitch between final and first marker to complete row. Knit 3 more rounds. Then work the sixth decreasing round – knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (6th and 7th stitches), repeating 5 times to decrease to 37 sts. Work pattern stitch for 6 rounds,

Decreasing for crown:
Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (5th and 6th sts). Repeat 5 times. (31 sts) Knit one round.
Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (4th and 5th sts). Repeat 5 times. (25 sts) Knit one round.
Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (3rd and 4th sts). Repeat 5 times. (19 sts) Knit one round.
Knit until 2nd stitch before marker, then K2tog (2nd and 3rd sts). Repeat 5 times. (13 sts) Knit one round.
K2tog all the way around (1st and 2nd sts). Repeat 5 times. (7 sts) Knit one round.
K2tog all the way around, leaving 4 sts.

Create curlicue:
Knit one row, and without turning work, slip the stitches up the needle and pull yarn around to knit another row. Repeat 12 times. This will create a long ‘I-cord’. Cut yarn leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread tail into yarn needle, and pull cord down through top of cap to create curlicue. Secure and weave in end of yarn, trim. Secure and weave in cast-on tail. Hand wash and shape to dry, pulling out the bubble sections to make them puffier.

For 3-6 Months:

Before you begin: Knit a swatch in the round and check to make sure your gauge is 7 sts per inch in stockinette (knit each row). Adjust needle size if necessary.

Preparation: Cast on 79 sts and join, taking care not to twist sts, place markers after every 13th stitch, leaving 1 stitch between first and last marker. Work one 14 rounds of pattern stitch and one decreasing round (K2tog 12th and 13th stitch to decrease to 73 sts), then knit 4 rounds straight. From this point, follow directions for 0-3 months starting at “Body of hat” section.

Soft Serve Baby Hat

This is a design I did a few years ago and gave to Fiber Gallery in Seattle to distribute with rights to sell it there, but I've always maintained my own copyright.

I was surprised to find that some people have knit it and put it as a project on Ravelry. This was pretty exciting for me and it even had some nice comments and pictures, I really appreciate anyone who has made it and reported on it.

And so, I'd like to offer this pattern for free on Ravelry. However, it seems to be taking a long time to get Ravelry to link me as the designer and so I haven't actually been able to put the pattern into the library there yet. Stay tuned!

Revontuli

Working away at the Revontuli. I've started a lunchtime crafting group on Fridays and it starts this week, am interested to see who will show up.

I love knitting with the Effektgarn, the lanolin is making my hands soft. I had forgotten working with so many processed yarns how a more natural yarns feels and works. It's rougher, but lovely to knit with and I cannot wait to block it and see the grub become a butterfly.

In other news, the name of this pattern keeps making me sing: "REVON...Revon likes his Tuli...he knits a lot they say..." Sigh. Once that got into my head it would not leave.
